Howard Chandler Christy
1873 - 1952

Portrait of Nancy, 1928

Self-portrait

Howard Chandler Christy had a long, colorful, and varied career. He was one of America's most distinguished illustrators, appearing regularly in the major national magazines. His popular image of American womanhood became known as the "Christy Girl." Later he turned to portraiture, and his sumptuous, painterly style was in great demand. Among his famous subjects were Mrs. Calvin Coolidge, Amelia Earhart, and Mrs. William Randolph Hearst. Christy was also known for his colorful murals and vivid historical paintings, the famous of which, "The Signing of the Constitution," hangs in the United States Capitol..
