"I painted this young girl after finishing portraits of her brother and her mother. The family lived in New Canaan, Connecticut. This was the commissioned painting that fit in well with the other portraits in their home. Another version of this child is painting #9 which is a three-quarter pose and is a little more experimental in the use of position and shadow. She is even wearing the same dress as in the other painting. Here her profile is in light and the use of the painting knife is in full effect—especially in the background." A.B.
