This painting was commissioned in Georgetown (near Washington D.C.) The
straight-on gaze exemplifies the close relationship Ariane was able to achieve
with her young sitter. This was the second of two sisters painted by the
artist. N.M.S.
"I think of this painting as a sentimental portrayal of
a little girl. The blouse was purchased for the occasion by her mother
at an antique store. The cameo was a family heirloom.
Her blonde hair was painted with yellow ochre, raw umber (in the shadows)
and white. To dull the intensity of the pigment I used permanent green
light. All these colors were Winsor Newton. Burnt sienna gave an overall
warm tinge." A.B.
