"When I painted this portrait I was intrigued with the variety of textures. My sitter was wearing a dark velvet dress sitting on a chair covered with a unique brightly colored woven fabric. I used Winsor Newton Bright Red oil paint for this.The full white silk hair ribbon, the white lace collar, the clasped hands and the white stockings help create a wonderful diagonal balance to the chair, face and plant N.M.S.
For compositional reasons to balance the shape of the chair I placed a large green plant in the upper right hand corner of the painting." A.B.
