"This is a portrait of a child from Minnesota. I tried something a little bit different here in that there is a dreamy feeling because her eyes look away from the viewer. .For her hair I used raw umber, burnt sienna and white. Almost all of the painting was done with a painting knife using very thick paint. The background, which is very textural, is much brighter than most of my other backgrounds. As I always do I painted the background darker near the light side of her face and lighter against the dark side of her face. This projects the head from the atmosphere and makes it more dramatic."
