"I had painted portraits of the entire family from New Canaan, Connecticut. I had already completed the painting of this young girl when I happened to see her in this particularly pleasing angle. The original portrait had a great deal more light on both sides of her face but I preferred to portray her in a more dramatic pose with part of her face seen in shadow. I made the background blue and light to contrast with the pink dress and dark hair." A.B.
