“I have always favored painting children with their heads tilted down and their glance directed upward. To me that exemplifies the small physical size and delicate nature of childhood. It is not easy to convince the sitters’ parents that this is an acceptable pose but I have tried to do so. In this case the portrait is a sample. Here I made a study of the hair which is painted quite thickly with the light bouncing strongly in contrast to the back of the hair which is in shadow.” A.B.
