To me that exemplifies the small physical size and delicate nature of childhood. It is not easy to convince the sitters’ parents that this is an acceptable pose but I have tried to do so. In this case the portrait is a sample. Here I made a study of the hair which is painted quite thickly with the light bouncing strongly in contrast to the back of the hair which is in shadow.” A.B.
